Martin Luther King
Martin Luther King was an African-American activist who led the American civil rights movement. He grew up in Atlanta, Georgia; so he experienced discrimination and racism first hand. King led a nonviolent movement in the late 1950’s and 60’s. With that he achieved equality for African – Americans in the United States.
Martin Luther King drew on his Christian faith and the peaceful teachings of Gandhi to achieve legal equality for the African-American’s in The United States. Unlike other people who have fought for something using violet actions, King used the power of words and acts of nonviolent resistance (protests, grassroots organizing and civil disobedience) to achieve seemingly impossible goals.
Martin Luther King then went on to lead other similar campaigns against poverty and international conflicts; whilst always maintaining fidelity to his principles that men and women everywhere, regardless of colour or creed, are equal members of the human family.
That’s why Marin Luther King and what he did is a triumph. He stood up for what he believed in and helped others to believe they could change something too. Plus he achieved this through non-violent means. He didn't let obstacles stop him, imprisonment, fire-bombings, continued fighting for what was right until he died on the 4th of April 1968.
